Based on a career of traditional home-building and renovations, Thur now specializes in renovation of older, traditional condominiums. Barry with his best friend Spartacus
Even as a high school student, Barry Thur was interested in construction. Exposed to various trades while attending school in Pembroke, Ontario, he gravitated toward woodworking and architectural drafting.
After graduation, Barry worked for Ontario Hydro, but fulfilled his interest in home construction, and developed his skills, by building homes, living in them, and then selling them. He moved day jobs to an electrical and plumbing company in the Ottawa Valley and then to an electrical company in Waterloo, Ontario, gaining valuable knowledge along the way.
Later, his joy of learning and experience accelerated when he became the site superintendent for a large Waterloo-based custom-home builder, overseeing construction of over 26 homes per year, and becoming versed with building codes and regulations. Eventually, Barry formed Thur Construction Ltd.
In 1992, Barry, his wife, and Thur Construction Ltd., moved to Toronto. His work in home and condominium renovation expanded. In Toronto, many condominium buildings were aging and no longer met the needs of modern owners. In 2007, Barry sold Thur Construction Ltd. and now operates under Thur Inc.
Today, he and his wife, Charlotte, share their time between downtown Toronto, their custom-renovated condominium in Waterloo, and their northern Ontario property. Barry feels as comfortable in a tuxedo as in a pair of work boots. A self-described “generalist” with a broad range of interests. Barry and his wife are community minded people with an eclectic community involvement.
